Museo del Canal: The Heart of Global Trade
Located in a historic building within Casco Viejo, the Museo del Canal tells the epic story of the waterway that connected the world: The Panama Canal.
The building holds a good history to tell by itself. It was built in 1874 as the Grand Hôtel by George Loew. Then sold to Count Ferdinand de Lesseps to repurpose it as the offices of the Compaigne Universelle du Canal Interocéanique.
In 1904, it still served as the main offices of the construction of the Panama Canal but under the administration of United States and renamed Isthmian Canal Commission to later, in 1915, be bought by Panamanian President Belisario Porras who used it as the main office for mail and telegraph. Since 1996 it’s working as the museum of the Panama Canal.
You can walk through interactive exhibits that detail the French and American construction eras while highlighting the immense sacrifices made by workers during the early 20th century.
This museum does an excellent job of explaining how the canal transitioned into local hands and how it continues to function as a vital trade route today. It is an essential stop for anyone who wants to grasp the strategic importance of our country as a bridge for the entire world.
The Panama Canal Museum has permanent exhibitions worth the visit.

MUMO: Museum of the Mola
The Museo de la Mola (MuMo) provides an intimate look into the traditional textile art created by the Guna women of the San Blas Islands. Each layer of fabric tells a story about their worldview, nature, and the spiritual beliefs that define their colorful indigenous culture in a very modern space.
Visiting this museum allows you to appreciate the technical skill required to hand-sew these masterpieces using the complex and ancient reverse-appliqué technique. It is a visually stunning tribute to our living heritage that you absolutely cannot afford to miss during your cultural stay in Panama City Central America.

MAC Panamá: Contemporary Visions
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC) is the only institution in the country dedicated exclusively to the promotion and preservation of modern artistic expressions. You will find a rotating collection of provocative works from both established masters and emerging regional artists who push creative boundaries in our urban landscape.
The museum serves as a dynamic laboratory for culture where photography, painting, and digital installations invite you to see the region through a different lens. If you are looking for a break from historical sites, this creative sanctuary offers a fresh perspective on the most interesting museums in Panama.
The Biomuseum
The Biomuseum is one of our favorites. It’s a great stop for families with many interactive exhibitions. We’ve covered it before more than any other museum in Panama and we invite you to read more about it on our Blog by Blue.
