Bocas de Toro and it’s high ecological value

The Ramsar site San San-Pond Sak: San San-Pond Sak is a wetland area in the northwestern part of Bocas del Toro, near the border with Costa Rica. It covers 16,414 hectares, and consists of channels, shallow, brackish and freshwater lakes, coastal plains, bays, sand bars, and beaches. The vegetation of the area includes mangroves and peat bogs. San San-Pond Sak is a site of international importance, as it was designated as a Ramsar site in 1993. A Ramsar site is a wetland of global significance, especially for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. San San-Pond Sak is home to many species of plants and animals, some of which are endangered or endemic. For example, San San-Pond Sak hosts 133 species of birds, 55 species of mammals, 54 species of reptiles, 20 species of amphibians, and many species of fish and invertebrates. Some of the most notable species are the West Indian manatee, the leatherback turtle, the American crocodile, the harpy eagle, and the red macaw. San San-Pond Sak also provides important ecosystem services, such as water supply, flood control, erosion prevention, carbon sequestration, and climate regulation.
