What to do in

Oranjestad

as part of the Serenade of the Seas 2025-2026 itinerary

Welcome to Oranjestad, Aruba

Oranjestad, the vibrant capital of Aruba, traces its origins back to the late 18th century when Dutch colonists established it as a strategic harbor and administrative center. Named in honor of the Dutch Royal House of Orange, Oranjestad quickly became an essential hub for trade and commerce due to its advantageous position in the Caribbean Sea.

Initially, Oranjestad was a modest town built around Fort Zoutman, constructed in 1798 to protect Aruba from pirates and foreign invaders. Over time, the settlement expanded steadily, with the Willem III Tower added in 1868, serving as both a lighthouse and a watchtower. Throughout the 19th century, increased trade activities boosted Oranjestad’s growth, drawing merchants and settlers who contributed significantly to its multicultural character.

Today, Oranjestad reflects its rich heritage through beautifully preserved colonial buildings, vibrant cultural traditions, and historical landmarks. Its architecture distinctly showcases Dutch colonial styles combined with Caribbean influences, making Oranjestad a captivating destination full of historical charm and significance.
